I hope to have the first blog concerning the race posted on Monday, 17 November. The race officially starts Sunday with a 24 mile swim (that's right - 24 miles all at once) in a 50 meters indoors heated pool at the University of Nuevo Leon.
My main job at the race is to be a support crew for Michael Gaertner of Germany. I relate this to something like Nascar or Formula One racing where the driver only worries about racing, everything else is done by the support - getting foods/fluids/nutrition for them, clothing changes, etc.
Anyway - they will swim laps continuously; there is no official stopping. If you need to stop and go to the bathroom, rest a little, whatever - the clock is still ticking. The lead swimmer usually finishes around 13 hours and the last swimmers will get out around 24 hours into the race. They will then bike to the Parque Niños Héroes where the rest of the race takes place. The bike consists of a 1,120 mile endeavor while the run will culminate the race with a 262 mile slog (slow jog)/death march for some.
The Parque Niños Héroes is a former Army base but is now a sports center where they have a multitude of sports that are represented on the grounds. The track (the old road) where the race takes place is a 1.915 km two lane road. You will bike one direction and then run going in the other direction, on the opposite of the road. Makes for many laps ~ 938 for the bike and 223 for the run.
The winner will finish usually in about 8 days and you have two weeks to finish the whole event.
Stayed tuned during the event for updates, photos and standings.
